Why are Overbites Bad?

TeamOrthodontics

When a person’s top and bottom teeth don’t align properly, dentists call this a “malocclusion.” One of the most common types of malocclusions is an overbite. When someone has an overbite, their top teeth overlap in front of the bottom teeth. If you have an overbite, your dentist may recommend braces or another solution to correct it.

There’s a harmful but common misconception that dentists only recommend braces for overbites because they want the money. The idea is that the only reason to fix this malocclusion is for cosmetic reasons. This couldn’t be further from the truth

Malocclusions of all types can cause serious problems with your oral and overall health. Sometimes, these issues are not noticeable for many years, but they do arise. Understanding the risks associated with overbites can help you decide whether or not to seek treatment.

Overbite Severity and Causes

There’s nobody quite like you, and your overbite is unique too. One person’s overbite may be so slight that no intervention is necessary. Another person’s overbite may be so severe that chewing is painful. And there are a million more unique smiles in between.

It’s important to know that the severity of your overbite influences how risky it is. The less of your bottom teeth you can see when you close your bite, the more likely you will need intervention.

Whether you need intervention will also depend on the cause of the `overbite. Sometimes, it is simply someone’s genetic makeup or the fact that they sucked their thumb. However, sometimes an overbite is a symptom of an underlying issue. If teeth-grinding or Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction causes your overbite, your dentist may need to treat that issue.

Is an Overbite Harmful?

Left untreated, an overbite can cause issues with your oral health, including:

  • Tooth decay and gum disease from overcrowding
  • Recurring headaches
  • Persistent jaw pain and tension
  • Sleep apnea
  • Trouble with speaking
  • Pain while eating

If you have any of these symptoms, be sure to talk to your dentist.

Smiling with Confidence Matters

Some people with mild malocclusions decide to get their teeth aligned, even if their risk of physical problems is low. That’s because confidence matters. When you feel good about your smile, you do it confidently and may even smile more often.

Smiling not only feels good, but it has proven health benefits as well. Smiling often can help you:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Strengthen your immune system
  • Reduce pain and stress

We believe in helping people have their healthiest and happiest smiles.
